Digital Command Control (DCC) is the modern standard for operating multiple trains and accessories on a model railroad. This workshop will provide a general overview of how DCC works, including National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) standards, popular command stations and throttles, decoder technology, and Wi-Fi control options.
While the term "Digital Command Control" may sound complicated, DCC is actually easier to wire and operate than traditional DC power systems, especially for layouts running multiple trains. With today's technology, trains and accessories can even be controlled from a smartphone or tablet using a Wi-Fi connection.
This workshop will be presented by an experienced model railroader with more than 15 years of hands-on experience using Digital Command Control.
From a small home layout to a massive public display, modular railroading offers flexibility and endless possibilities. Thanks to established module standards, model railroaders can build a compact switching layout for an apartment or office, expand to a basement-sized railroad, or take selected modules to participate in large public exhibitions.
While each module must meet specific connectivity and interface standards, modelers have complete freedom when it comes to scenery, theme, and level of detail. Modern lightweight construction materials make modules easy to transport, allowing hobbyists to share their work and collaborate with fellow modelers at club events and public displays.
This workshop will provide an excellent introduction to the exciting world of modular railroading and will be presented by an experienced modular model railroader.
No model railroad is truly complete without realistic scenery. Many hobbyists begin by building a benchwork platform, laying track, adding power, and placing a few structures. Then visitors inevitably ask, "When are you going to add the scenery?"
Scenery gives a layout purpose, context, and visual appeal. Today's modelers can create realistic landscapes using a combination of traditional model railroad products and affordable materials readily available from home improvement centers and craft stores. From mountains and forests to roads, streams, and detailed scenes of everyday life, scenery transforms a collection of track into a miniature world.
In this workshop, you'll learn practical techniques and materials that can help bring your railroad to life. The session will be presented by an award-winning model railroader recognized nationally for his outstanding scenery craftsmanship.
